VECTOR HACK 2018


I haven't updated in a while (there is still a write up of my amazing signal culture trip last year coming)

But this is too good not to leave a short post about. I am helping Ivan and Derek with their amazing Vector Hack Festival project. Vector Hack is a festival centred around experimental vector graphics using oscilloscopes and lasers. It's happening in over two sites starting in Zagreb on 01/10/18 and ending in Ljubljana on 07/10/18. I will be attending so if you decide to come see you there!

Ivan and Derek have worked tirelessly to make this happen and it's going to be amazing.

Ewa Justka

I found some photos from the semi regular EAVI  night from November where Ewa played which reminded me to post up some of her work and a link to her great site. Zoran Radovic

Zoran Radovic has been working with pendulums, plotters, lasers and CRT displays since the 1960s. A recent post by an online friend highlighted the fact that his studio is being sold off, I noticed some plotter art on the wall which lead me to check out his great site detailing his fantastic work. www.radovic-art.de he details his various systems building on his ideas and demonstrating how some of his systems work. Mandalamat

Here is the very cool Mandalamat an analogue computer specifically built by Christian Günther to create interesting patterns either using an XY plotter or an Oscilloscope, I have had an XY plotter for a while and made a few drawings using modular synthesizer and function generators but nothing this beautiful!

Oscillographic Colourisation Experiments and the Barbican

 So the performance at the Barbican went ok Lawrence's performance and the structure he designed were really great annoyingly my oscilloscope refused to work even after Stan very kindly lent me a screwdriver so I could trouble shoot, However I had plenty of equipment to perform with and Lawrence and my performance fed in to each other as we played so it went pretty well. Stan and Dan's performance was really amazing. Thanks to Andi who was also on hand to help capture some film of the performances.

TV Oscilloscope Adaptor

This is an adapter attached to a TV set. This machine changes a TV to a Oscilloscope. See the photo! This photo indicates a sine wave 50mV 120Hz. See the circuit! Free oscillater makes an 15kHz pulse signal (A). This signal is amplified by an buffer AMP. On the other hand , an amplifier makes 300 times of input signal. And it is shifted to 6V center. A comparater compares a voltage (C) and (B). this comparater makes an pulse width modulated signal on (D) point. Differencial circuit makes a small pulse on the changing timing of the pulse. Buffer receives two signals ,(A) and (E). Therefore it is called as an adder. This machine is able to indicates only 60Hz or 120Hz or 180Hz

Iconicamera

The Ionic  company was an EMS American distributor for a time until it cloned the VCS3 and keyboard in to a single unit of it's own "design", it had some relatively interesting ideas about marketing, one of it's other products looks to have been a modified TV that acted like a simple oscilloscope a project common on the web these days and a technique utilized from the late 60s in to the early 70s by Paik amongst others.

Video Oscilloscopes !

Some very expensive digital oscilloscopes have composite outputs, if like me you can't find one cheap there are a few other products on the market to fit the bill.

The very cool Critter and Guitari Video Scope produces colourful NTSC video for $99

















For us Europeans the MFB VD-01 Videoscope synth module gives a more traditional black and white PAL scope image for €159.

Both units give a slightly blocky output unlike a real oscilloscope image but they could both find a home in a hardwarevideo set up. They also eliminate the need for rescanning a normal oscilloscope screen (which has its own charm but demands space and equipment).
