Tele Visions Project

"Commemorate the end of TV with Tele Visions, a series of live and broadcast events interrogating the medium of television on its death bed.

Devised, curated and produced to mark the occasion of the analog switch off around Australia, Tele Visions introduces audiences to the works of more than 100 artists working in the televisual space.

You can tune in live via the Tele Visions website or catch it on the analog broadcast if you live nearby. Box Set will be running 24hrs a day until midnight this Wednesday the 27th, from then on the Tele Visions channel begins a five day long continuous broadcast of artworks made for TV. Box Set is one of five live works commissioned by Tele Visions. Other artists include Lara Thoms, WRONG SOLO, Joel Stern and Pia van Gelder.

The entire broadcast program is now online with more than 120 works from 100 artists scheduled up to the minute each day. You can peruse the program from the Tele Visions website or download the TV Guide which also features short critical essays from Doug Anderson (SMH TV reviewer for 40 years), Sherry Miller Hocking (Experimental Televison Centre) and John Gillies (Video Artist and academic COFA). Pick up a limited edition printed (in glorious pink!) TV Guide at live events at both Carriageworks and Verge Gallery.
Tele Visions (28 November – 3 December 2013) is a project devised, directed and produced by Alex White and Emma Ramsay. Presented by Performance Space as part of the YOU’RE HISTORY, a program celebrating 30 years of Performance Space."

"Synthetic Divinity was a St. Louis cable television show in 1994-1996. It was abstract, surreal, science fiction video art created by Tory, Enero, and Bruce Wulff. Sasha Feline was in part of this. Other friends and members of neXtrAdio helped and the soundtrack was always created by neXtrAdio. The muzik was usually from the live improvisations that took place on Tory's KDHX radio show, Nocturnal Designs. Doc Mabuse, Tom Sutter, Perry Emge were in the band and helped with filming, acting and ideas."

DIY Micro Video Transmitter Workshop

on the 17th of this fine month I attended a DIY micro video transmitter workshop hosted by Ryan Jordan and run by Kyle Evans of Cracked Ray Tube, The design was based on one produced by Tetsuo Kogawa and continually developed as part of his practice. Kyle also uses this circuit in his work to great effect to derive perfectly imperfect images and abstract raw colour video signal in to new jagged forms. Everyone at the workshop got to make and try a transmitter and we even used two at once. The design is really simple and purposefully unstable to allow artistic exploitation of it's properties.

anyone with limited soldering skills could produce one of these devices easily and it was great fun tuning it in and watching the results. The construction is also beautifully simple using the copper coated PCB material a ground plane and attaching 'tags' to the surface using more PCB material make construction fast simple and relatively interference free. If you can't get to a workshop run by Kyle (which I would recommend due to the fun and social aspect and great documentation alone) then don't fret as the low parts count  make this easy to source and build on your own. 

I was sad not to be able to stay for the live performance by Kyle,  Ryan and a host of others but alas I was halfway though moving house :<

Next Thursday (13 April 2012), Artists’ Film Club presents a selection of ground-breaking works from the archive of New York’s Experimental TV Center. An insight into the recent history of artists using, exploiting and subverting new electronic media technologies.
In the early 1970′s, artists were moving outside existing organisational structures in attempts to create more utopian systems, in critique of television and mainstream media. However, until the 1990′s artists struggled to access these new media tools for their own uses. Founded in 1969 in Owego, New York state, the Experimental TV Center has been a hub for video engineering and experimentation ever since.

Created by artists for other artists the center has developed its own unique bank of radical editing and image processing equipment, worked with by such diverse artists such as Gary Hill, Ikue Mori, Nam June Paik and Abigail Child.

The Artists’ Film Club presents a programme of works from the ETC’s archive and is selected by artist James Richards, and Associate Curator of Artists’ Moving Image, Steven Cairns.

"Re-enacting Liberation: The Feminism of our Times

Radical collective Red Channels is in town from New York City, and is bringing rare films and videos to screen, and for use in stimulating open discussion. This program features early examples of video art, collectively produced documentary, and recent reenactments, which explore the relationship of moving image artists to political agitators and organizers, with work featuring Angela Davis and Valerie Solanas, and two rare productions by Carole Roussopoulos.

This years first issue of the biannual are magazine Esopus is focused on television I haven't got it (just browsed it and left it on the shelf) but it looks quite interesting. They also put on an event at the legendary media art pioneers Woody and Steina Vasulka's hang out The Kitchen

"just when it seems that television as we have known it is over, we are asked if we are ready for more. The MACBA presents a television defined by the experiments of artists, thinkers and media professionals in order to show what happens when a relationship is established between such different languages. It is not an exhibition about television, but one conceived from the place of television.
